Vases
A sculpture has no practical daily function like a cup or teapot. It was Erik's wife Jonelle who encouraged him to take up vases and convinced him that it must be possible to create vases in an organic language of form. It proved both possible and inspiring. The material is the same stoneware clay, and the turntable is the same – but the technique differs slightly from the sculptures.

The working process
Base: First a base of clay is laid.
Coiling technique: The wall is built up in coils, layer by layer, until the vase has the desired size and basic form.
Shaping: The form is refined with hands and scrapers until the organic character is in place.
Glaze & firing: After bisque firing, different glazes are applied before the final firing. The vases are often signed with the year.
